The reference photo for this painting caught my attention for many reasons. First, it represents several of the things I am trying to instill in my children as they grow - hard work, perseverance, and grit. Secondly, it takes me back to growing up as a 4-H kid, which I really loved. And of course, the photo is just so darn cute!
I saw the reference photo on Facebook, when a friend of mine posted about their 4-H Achievement Day. Graciously, she and the photographer agreed that I could use it as a painting reference.
Now, as you know, I've been really sinking into painting animals the past few years and therefore have learned so much about it. I'd maybe only painting a handful of times before, and it was quite a while ago. So, I procrastinated for at least a year before I gave it a whirl. It turns out I need a lesson in grit myself - just try it, give a shot, what's the worst thing that can happen? At worst, I wipe the paint off my canvas and start again. I ended up reworking the face several times, but in the end I was really happy with it!
Working up a bit of grit was all I needed to do. I definitely over thought it! I have a few more reference photos in my file containing the human figure. Will I mess them up? Maybe, but I'll now excited to give them a try. If I mess up, I'll just have to reach a bit deeper for more grit.
This painting will be available on my website on December 4th, 2024 at 7pm MDT.
